Super Silos In Uptown Charlotte, 3 pics

The Archer Daniel Midland flour and corn mill plant in uptown Charlotte, NC remains one of the nation’s largest milling facilities.  Over the years, local neighborhood based organizations have pushed to have the facility closed.  Yet it remains a part of the Charlotte skyline. Either ADM “supermarket to the world” has leveraged their deep pockets and army of lawyers to stay put, or folks in Charlotte have gotten used to the tall silos and train traffic.  Maybe both.

I shot this series from a Brookshire Freeway overpass in the late afternoon. Though I was careful, the oncoming traffic was intense.  Shooting a bracketed range of exposures from my tripod, there were a few series I re-shot because of the “bouncing” overpass from passing big rigs. The late afternoon sun on the adjacent NC Music Factory Blvd also caught my eye.

  1. These are beautiful! Wonder why the locals want the plant shut? Noise, pollution? I saw silos like these in southwest Georgia late last year that had been painted depicting Civil War scenes and other things. They were huge paintings, very beautiful work.
